Loft advice

Hi,
Hope someone can advise or had similar experience. We have recently moved into a new build property and noticed over past couple of weeks a scratching noise coming from the loft, We haven’t heard it every day and think last time we heard anything was a few weeks ago, however it was very apparent this morning so we spent some time looking into it. First off we got a suitable ladder and has a really good look on the outside of the house (front, side and back) looking at the guttering, roof and eaves. We then went into the loft and we couldn’t see any noticeable holes or entry points and also no dropping or scratches or tearing of the minimal things we have in there were observed. So at the moment we are thinking it could well be a bird(s) on the roof or in the guttering which could be echoing in the empty loft making it sound like it’s actually in the loft. Has anybody else experienced this or could advise in case we may of missed something.
Cheers
Si

If you have loft insulation, pull some back and look underneath for evidence of droppings.

When we moved into our current house, we had to replace some of the old insulation due to plumbing work. On the top it looked OK, underneath it was full of old mouse nests and droppings. Fortunately for us it was all old and there was evidence of traps/poison. However, they must have been overrun at one point, so it’s always worth a look!
  • Birds could be getting into your soffits, which will sound a lot like they are actually in the loft (I know this because we have Starlings nest in our soffits each year).
