Window Replacement

We are completing on a property in a weeks time.
House will be long term place so looking at long term decision here.

It has double glazing already but old and tired and need replacing.
Want to get triple glazing fitted.

Had a quick search online and there are the 3-4 big firms out there. some smaller ones in the local area (uxbridge/ruislip area)

My question. Apart from getting A++ rating windows/frames, is there much difference between any of these windows or window companies?

Or is it like most things, get 2-3 quotes and make your decision based on those?

Don't go with the big boys. A local independent will be cheaper and do a better job.

Why renew the windows? In terms of eco, and sustainability if the current windows are performing then it is madness to replace them. Even in terms of energy saving it does not add up spending thousands to save pounds per year.

Also put your engineering eye over the whole upvc window - everything about them is driven down to a price and of poor, or barely adequate quality. Then ask why commercial buildings, decent spec apartments, German homes and passiv haus avoid upvc windows like a plague.

If you want triple glazing look closely at the profile detailing and the hinge mechanisms and locking.

If you are searching around bear in mind Which Magazine slated Anglian, Everest and Safestyle around 15 months ago. The verdict was to go with a good, local, independent company.
  • Thanks for the comments.

Windows were installed in 1990s according to survey. have aluminum spacer, so cold bridging possible, some rubber shrinkage and some misting up.
EPC also stated if we replace we get a higher rating, and save £46 a year..... (yes, I understand this ;) )

Also some had issues opening them as not used much. yes, that is maintenance really.

found a local company who are a Which Trusted Trader so will get them in to quote for us.
See how they sell there products and ask some technical queries ;)

A local may do a better job, but they can also make a right pig's ear of it - Had one such outfit fit a door & some facia boards. To call them muppets would be disservice to Mr Henson. I suspect even a cowboy would have done a better job.

I've found installers from this site in the past with success:

    http://www.certifiedinstallernetwork.org

They have all been small, independent companies who are not pushy.

The misted up glazing units can be replaced. I had one replaced for £100.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
