Santander unable to accept new standing order

Just opened another Virgin Regular E-Saver (this time Issue8 at 2.25%) as I migrate my cash savings away from current accounts (BOSx3 paying 2%) that require Tesco DDs which finish next April. I use Santander as my hub for all this activity and everything usually goes ok, but after depositing the £250 opening balance to the Virgin Issue8 I try to set up a standing order for 13 payments beginning on 1/12/17 and all goes well until the final confirm stage and a page comes up telling me they are unable to complete my request. This has happened before and I can usually set up the standing order the next day. Has anyone else experienced this with Santander.

  • I've experienced this on several occasions. It usually works the next day. I've never yet had to call Santander to set up a SO but it is frustrating when it doesn't work on the first attempt online.

I had exactly the same when setting up the SO from San to Virg E Reg Sav8 but changing the live date to a few days later in Nov worked for me (have had this issue a few times previously too).

Yes, I've had similar several times. As far as I know it's nothing to do with the dates or amounts of the payments, just a glitch at their end and I usually find that if I try again a few minutes later it works.

Yes, its happened to me a couple of times.

When its happened in the past, I've found it works if I leave it a few days after the initial payment has cleared, before setting it up.

I've also noticed that Santander doesn't like it if I try to set up the 1st SO on a non working day (but that doesn't apply in OP's case)

Not experienced this, but noticed a bug in their SO system in my experience:

I have set up a SO which I want to make 1st payment on asap basis so choose say tomorrow's date, but want the repeat at the beginning of the following months. It then has NEVER worked in the few times I've done it.

It's not an over sight, I make a note, take a dump (screen) to be sure, and check it... and it fails & I have to make a manual transfer to achieve the different first payment date.

    The repeats work ok.
  • What are the conditions to open a virgin regular E saver please?

Just set up 2 MS8s for MrsM & me and the Santander SOs set up with no problems.
  • Tried again this evening - still refusing after OTP was entered - will try tomorrow.
Molerat - did you deposit the £250 as a new payment immediately and then set up the SO for the rest of the payments or did you make all of the payments by SO in one go?

I posted what I thought the reason was yesterday, but then deleted it because I wasn't sure as I'd only be quoting what Santander told me, which might not have been correct.

Your last payment falls on a non-working day (Sat 1st December 2018). Try setting it up for the 4th (Monday this year, Tuesday next year). If it works, then amend it to the 1st.

Just a thought, are you setting the SO up to pay an existing payee or trying to create a new payee?
