Ceramic heaters

Hello

Was watching Ideal World (sad I know). They were selling Green Energy 2000W Ceramic Heaters for £249. Presenter said they warm up in 3 minutes, store the heat, turn themselves off, then release the heat. Made out they are very cheap to run as you only heat the rooms you are using.

I don’t have proper C/H won’t be able to afford it for a while yet. I have a gas fire in the living room & a couple of gas wall heaters (hallway & bedroom). I thought one of these ceramic heaters might be a a cheap alternative.

Has anybody used these, are they any good?

Thanks

Unless they have managed to disprove the first law of thermodynamics, penny for penny, they will produce the same heat as any other electrical heater.

I cannot comment how quickly they warm up (in the show I saw, they were still aparently heating up many minutes after being switched off), but if they are giving out heat after they are turned off, they are not giving out as much heat when turned on as other electrical heaters do that stop giving out heat when turned off.

    Think Night Storage Heaters ;)
(Except with these, they take advantage of cheap rate electricity when used in conjunction with E7 :money:)

How much are Ideal World charging for this magical heater that continues to give out heat after it is switched off? Oil filled electric radiators also do this, and a 2000W one can be purchased for about £35-£40 from numerous outlets.

A 2.55kW NSH from leading brand Dimplex, should be available for less than £400 if you shop around :) These will give out heat for the rest of the day after switch off, not the rest of the hour non-storage heaters would typically go cold by.

In general any product that 'plays' the 'green energy' card is suspect; and IMO those heaters prove the point.

The start point for you is to appreciate that ALL electrical heaters produce EXACTLY the same amount of heat, for the same running cost. That applies to a £10 heater from Argos, to £1,000 heaters marketed with outrageous claims and filled/coated with any ingredient known to man.

Thus the 2,000w(2kW) ceramic heater for £249 produces no more heat than any other 2kW heater - including the aforementioned £10 Argos heater, and is no more economical to run.

  • are they any good?

    - as good as any other £20 heater from LidL or any other supplier but £229 more expensive
    - radiative not convective is best and thermostat & timer is useful, £40 gets you a good one
    - radiative heats people, convective heats ceilings and seagulls

Here you are, does exactly the same job as a ceramic heater and costs exactly the same to run and it will start blowing hot air in around 30 seconds so it's faster than a ceramic heater.

It costs just £10.80+vat = £12.96 saving you £236.04 over the posh ceramic one on the telly.

or look here, all of them will cost the same per kilowatt and a 2kw one will produce the same amount of heat as the magic 2kw ceramic ones and all of them are loads cheaper. Nearly all of them have a thermostat and some have timers - take your pick

  • I think it’s a bit late now to share that now, but may be next time you can check this website where you can find a very interesting buying guide on Ceramic heaters. This one.

Here are some more - https://www.screwfix.com/c/heating-plumbing/heaters/cat831056?calcheaterproducttype=ceramic#category=cat831056&calcheaterproducttype=ceramic|oil_free_radiator - some are prettier than others but they all cost the same to run watt for watt as a posh, super duper extra special one at £250 or more
