Partial transfer query

Hi all,

I've got a number of balance transfers on a Barclaycard and while most of them are on target, I've slightly gone off-track with the most recent one and am behind clearing it by a month.

It's nothing major as I can most likely still cover it but on the basis I cannot, I wanted to know how a partial transfer works.

If I have lets say 5 transfers all finishing at different times - lets call it transfer A - E where A finishes earliest and E latest.

If by the end of 0% period for A I am £500 short which would then flip over the standard rate, can I simply transfer the £500 to another 0% card and commence paying off transfer B...

And same for Transfer B, lets say I am £1000 short of paying it off by the end of the 0% period for transfer B, can I a month before transfer the £1000 to another card and commence paying for Transfer C?

From memory, you pay the highest interest amount first however all my BT's are 0% with different dates of finishing so I'm unsure how it treats a BT.

Actually having typed up all this, I'm now having flashbacks of a thread on here where by a BT is treated as a payment in which case if I transfer out an amount, it would just pay off the Transfer A as it finishes first

Please confirm - hopefully I've not confused the heck out of everyone!:rotfl:

Thanks in advance

  • Check how Barclaycard allocate payments to multiple BTs - it may be that payments go to the one that started first, or the one that finishes first.

Thanks zx81, I was meant to paste what the statement states so thanks for the reminder!

"Your payments wil be applied in the following order:
*Make any purchase plan payments due for that month
*Reduce your main balance (your statement balance less any purchase plan balance). We'll start with the balances charged at the highest interest rate first then reduce the lower rate and then
*If you've taken out any purcase plans, to reduce any remaining purchase plan balance.

Can't see anything about Multiple BT's (and there are no purchase plans)
  • Check in the terms and conditions.

They tend not to put it in the statements, thought I wish they would.
  • This seems to be it (current Platinum/Freedom/Initial terms) -

    • To reduce your main balance (your statement balance less any purchase plan balance). We’ll start with the balances charged at the highest interest rate first and then reduce the lower-rate balances. If you have more than one promotional balance at the same interest rate, we’ll use your payment to reduce the balance with the promotional rate that ends first

Which is what you want, and the next balance to bear interest will be the one paid off/BT'd.

zx81 - Brilliant thanks for doing the legwork on this. I did find a section on the barclaycard section but literally every link states "check your statement" which clearly does not seem to state the initial query.

The card indeed is a Platinum so that does answer my query.

    Thanks again
