I feel a bit stupid....

My bunny had to be put down yesterday morning :-( I know how you feel! He was 9, and although I got him when I was a teenager at home, I live away from home now and Mum and Dad have looked after him for the last few years (very well!). Even being 9 he was still very perky, racing around his run and jumping on and off his hutch. Mum noticed he had slowed down a lot this week, thought it was just old age, but on friday he didn't come out from his hutch until 6pm and when he did he looked terrible, so mum took him to the vet yesterday morning. He had myxamitosis, really sad, apparently there's been a lot of it this year because of the wet weather. There are antibiotics but they aren't guaranteed to work, and because of his age the vet thought it might be best to put him down.
I didn't think I'd be too upset, but I really was, when mum rang to tell me how ill he looked on friday I burst into tears in the middle of John Lewis! Just allow yourself to be upset. I am still feeling quite sad about it and I just saw that Abbey advert on TV with the rabbit in and I started tearing up! Don't let anyone tell you its just a rabbit. they are such lovely pets. When I have a place with a garden I'm going to get another one if I can xxxx0 -
I think anyone who has loved and lost a pet will know exactly how you feel, take notice of anyone who says to you "oh it was only a whatever it was" they obviously haven't been lucky enough to know the love of a pet. i like a previous poster have lost rats(hamsters piggies and cats as well) and still howl my eyes out everytime anything happens to any of them.
a good friend of mine has been a teacher for many years and said that she has always found that kids who experience pets dying (when gently explained properly and appropriatly for their age) always handle death of a loved relative/friend etc far better than those who haven't(htms).
kids are v resilient and if things are explained to them they usually handle it far better than adults do:oLead us not into temptation...
just tell us where it is and we'll find it....0 -

Had a great year so far, lost my dad, job & pet! Hopefully the old things come in threes will be true!!

I just typed out a long reply about my dog being out to sleep recently (about 2 months ago) but got about half way thru before the tears, red eyes and sniffling got too much, don't want my colleagues thinking I'm a mentalist! Saying that, they saw how upset I was when my mum called to say Lucy was being put down so they should be used to it.
But I think its ok to be upset, and I think you have to love and be loved by an animal to realise the impact they can have and the huge hole they leave when they're gone (and I truely believe pets can love you in return in their own furry little ways). Lucy was 14 was she was put to sleep, I hadnt lived with her (at my mums) for 6 years, but I cried for days both before and after it happened (not a good thing on the 200mile round trip to spend that one last night with her!) I dread to think what I will be like if anything happened to the 6yr old 'pup' that lives with me

I had to have my beloved rescue pony put to sleep last october because she was too arthritic to walk any more. I knew it was coming for ages.
I still sob when I think about her now.
Whether you love a person, animal or a pot plant, it still hurts the same and is still just as valid when they die.

Its heartwarming to read that there are so many caring people about. We have had many animals over the years including Dogs, Cats, Chickens, Rabbits and Bees .. I was about to say that the Bees were the only ones you do not get attached to but then remembered one occasion when we went out in the car and after a few miles realised one of our bees was in the car , we were going to let it out of the window then realised it would not find its way back to the hive so we drove it back !
We had Chickens ( 2 sisters ) and when one of them died the other was so lonely and became very clingy to us , so much so that we took it on holiday with us !
If those stories are not 'silly' enough here is real silliness ... after moving house once the previous owners had left a rather ugly 3 foot tall plant which we decided to get rid of but it stayed in the car boot for days , one day after shopping i said i have had enough of this and put it on the wall in the multi storey car park and drove off, we looked back and it looked a terrible site a poor abandoned plant in a concrete grave yard ... we went back and picked it up !!WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
Blimey what was that ?
That was your life mate
Oh I wasn’t quite ready can I have another go ?
Sorry mate only one per person.0
