In my experience, better to use a stick than a bigger drive. My tv works with all the USB sticks I've tried, but won't read larger HDs.0

Hi, this may be a stupid question but i am wondering if i can dl movies that are on my pc to a portable external hard drive and watch them on my tv at the cabin using a usb cord (thats connected to the hard drive and into my DVD player)???if so, can someone please suggest a reliable hard drive? I am not looking to spend a fortune.
Yes
Although you may be able to bypass the DVD player altogether and plug directly into the TV.
Have a feel about for a usb port0 -
If you have a laptop with a HDMI socket, you can attach the eternal HDD to the laptop, and then connect the laptop to the TV.
Depending on the sound quality and volume of the laptop, you might want to invest in a set of powered speakers.0 -
The WD Passport portable drives are powered through the USB connection and not all TV USB ports provide sufficient power out.0

If it's a new style LG then yes you can power a portable <2TB USB hard drive. Else you will just need to put the videos on a USB flash drive to play them.0

thank you all for your replies/suggestions. Which thumb drives are the most reliable?0

Probably ones from manufacturers you recognise (like Kingston, Sandisk, Cruzer, Lexar, Toshiba...).Which thumb drives are the most reliable?
But bear in mind that you should always "Safely Eject Hardware" before removing them from a PC or laptop, and that a USB Flash Drive is considerably less reliable than a USB External Hard Drive.0
