A comprehensive overview of Carer's Allowance which will answer all of your questions.

Doesn't answer your question, but has your mum looked at applying for attendance allowance to top up her pension? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Your mum would have to be in receipt of Attendance Allowance before you can claim Carer's Allowance.0

You have the right to a carer's assessment from your local social worker team. Contact the local authority and ask them - they have to ensure that you're able to carry on caring for your mum.Debt 1/1/17 - Credit Cards £17,280.23; overdrafts £3,777.24
Debt 5/1/18 - Credit Cards £3,188; overdrafts £00 -
Hi
Thanks for the replies my um gets attendance allowance and pension credit. I was just wondering if i was entitled to carers allowance, i was told i wasn't because i worked but i still care for my mum as well. I have relations that receive carers allowance as they are disabled, but then THEY claim carers allowance for their partner!! how is it possible for someone to get carers for someone who is disabled but then the disabled person claim and receive carers allowance for caring for their partner.

It is possible, being disabled doesn't mean unable to care for someone else - depends what the disabilities are.
You have to be providing at least 35 hours care per week, ie the equivalent of a full time job.
With regard to working, it depends how much you earn, if over £116 a week net then you're not entitled to carers allowance. Similarly if you're a full time student you can't usually claim it.
I agree it doesn't seem fair, the person that claims carer's allowance for helping me provided no less help when he was a full time student, but wasn't entitled to claim until the day he finished.
Being a carer isn't only acknowledged by receiving carer's allowance though, you may find that certain things, such as looking after your wellbeing in view of your caring responsibilities, are accessible to you without being entitled to carer's allowance.0 -

It isn't because you work, it's the amount you earn that prevents a claim for CA - 'you earn no more than £116 a week after tax and some expenses'.

My parents both claimed Attendance Allowance for their own needs and were entitled to claim Carer's Allowance for each other as well. Their needs were different and they were able to provide care to ensure each other's safety.
Some people think this shouldn't be allowed as couples should care for each other but that's the way the law was made.0 -
The other thing to check out is whether you mum is getting the severe disability premium with her Pension Credit.
She would get this if she is living alone (or treated as living alone), receives AA and no one gets Carer's allowance for her.
If she is getting this severe disability premium then she would lose it if anyone claimed Carer's Allowance for her.0 -
but that's the way the law was made.
And all must take advantage......:)0
