Partner has debt. Moving in

Hi
I want to move in with my partner but they have debt (from before we met). Whilst I know they’re dealing with it and will continue to do so, I also don’t want us moving in to mean that their debt transfers to me. How do I protect myself financially here? I don’t want to end up being legally tied to a large debt that actually has nothing to do with me. If things continue to go well and we marry that’s different but we’re not there yet.
I remember reading a while back something about declaring you have no financial relationship with that person but will that apply if we have an actual relationship and share rent?

It’s not your debt. End of, really.

It could harm your credit rating, although I think it’s not meant to.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Don't open a joint account with your partner and you'll be fine.

Unless you become financially linked or get married then your credit rating won't be affected. You're not liable for debt in their name at all. I'm not sure if a rent contract would be enough to link you financially, it's probably better for you to post on the debt free wannabe board.

Definitely don't open joint accounts for anything.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Previously, everyone under the same roof shared a credit history. You can imagine the problems this must have caused. Unruly previous tenants affecting your ability to get a phone contract or non-dependant children racking up bad debt under your roof!

Those days are long gone, there’s no such thing as a blacklist and each file
Provided that you’re not financially associated in any way and you’ve never had any joint accounts or debts, your credit history will be entirely separate from anyone else’s, whether you live with them or not.
If you don’t like a thread or post just move on by.

If you don't open a joint account or don't pay any of his debt off you will be fine.
