Problem with Microsoft Money 2005

Options
Please can anyone help me?

I have been running my business accounts on Microsoft Money for years now.

About 18 months ago, I got a new laptop which came with a Works Suite, which included Money 2005, which is a later version than I had been using previously.

I installed it on my new laptop, and installed the backed up copy of my accounts.

I back up my accounts regularly, and transfer the backup onto my home computer. It was halfway through the year that I realised that the home computer wouldn't open the backed up file.

I thought it was just because it was an older version, and so installed the newer version that had come with the laptop.

It still wouldn't open.

It gave a message along the lines of " Windows could not locate C:accounts/my documents/....etc etc. It is possible that the disc is write protected or you do not have access to this file" or something similar.

I have tried transferring the file via MP3 player, CD (RW and R) and a ZIP disc, and all give the same message.

A computer guru at a repair shop thouht the file was corrupt, and that I would have to start again.

As it's just been my financial year end, I thought now would be as good a time as any to do this.

Having spent a few hours creting a new file, and setting up the accounts, and entering a few transactions, I now find it still won't transfer between the two computers!

If I create a new file on the home computer, that will transfer to the laptop, but once I have entered anything into it, and re-saved it, that file will not then open on the home PC again.

Anyone any idea what's going on, and if there is a way to get the two files talking again.

Thanks.

P.S I have tried un & re installing the program on the home PC. I darent do that on the laptop, as I will loose all my data for the last 3 years, although the vast majority of it is printed onto paper - which is all my accountant would ever need.

Are you copying the main file (.mny) or the backup file (.mbf) from the laptop to the PC?

    Main file.

I don't actually bother 'backing up' the way the program prompts me to.

I just copy the file onto whichever media I'm using, and then paste it into the other computer, overwriting the previous file of that name.

It always worked well in the past.

I've had something like this. It was to do with authorities. I think. I got around it by creating a data CD for use buy other computers/users.

Do you mean that the Works Suite that came with the laptop will only work with the laptop?

I suspected that, but haven't had any problems opening and reading other files like Works Databases, and Word.

I already had Word on the home computer, but the Database program was loaded off the disc.

Maybe it was something to do with the fact that the disc version of Money was 2005, and it was 2003 on my home machine. Something happened in the upgrade maybe?

I have always transferred my money file between computers using a USB memory stick, I just 'lift' the MMF from program files in windows explorer on one comp and 'drop' it into the same location on the other comp and when it asks if I want to replace, yes and it is done. I do have the same version of Money on both machines.
Have you tried uninstalling all versions of money from your home pc and re-installing the newer version? Then drop your money file into the folder and open from the taskbar.

I think I know what that is and how to fix it.

Just one question did you reinstall it?

Then after you could not open any old saved files.

If so I know what the problem is, will brb with the answer I need to find the text, but from memory when you start money you have to be on the internet and let it download an update. You should get a popup saying that.
This error is almost certainly because the trial version of Money 2005, which you used, had the November 2004 patch (sometimes known as the 1105 update) integrated with it. Some boxed versions (for example, the UK one) do not have this patch, as the product was packaged and sent to distributors before this became available.

To see if your version has the patch, you look at Help->About and then the final number - 1105 indicates that is has, 0825 or 0730 indicates that it hasn't. However, you can't do this unless you open another file because you can't get that far due to the error.

What you need to do, is to open the sample file (found in the Microsoft Money directory at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money" or create a new file. Then check the version number again. At this point, if the version number is wrong, Money will want to download an update (if you are online). The product will display a message stating this. Let the update download and install - it may take a little while on a modem line, but is relatively quick on DSL. When Money has downloaded its update you should restart the program. Try to open your file again - making sure you open the correct file, as Money will open the last one you used.

This relates to it as well if I recall.

The opening balances in your accounts are not accurate after you convert your data file to Money 2005

I have sorted this out a few times for a friend.

If I could hit my 'thank you' button a thousand times, I would!!!

I have just un, then re-installed Money, and run an update thingy from the internet.

On closing down money, and reopening it, a test file that wouldn't open before now opens!!!!!

I haven't tried it with my main accounts file yet, but the signs are good!

It's a bit late now, so I'll do that tomorrow.

    Cheers muchly!

Your welcome, I just wish all the solutions were so easy.
  • Hello

I'm having the same problem as mentioned above. However, when prompted to download the update a message appears saying that I am not a member of the administrators groupm and I should sign on as an administrator in order to download the backup.

However, the user I am using is the administrator!!

Did anyone have any similar problems? Any ideas how I can download the update?

I would very much appreciate any help offered.
  • I guess your running Vista,

Close money, then right click on the icon to start money and choose "Run As Administrator"

Hi, I have just done a search for Microsoft money, as I have just reinstalled Windows (Vista) and have had to reinstall Money (2005). I can't seem to restore back up, it keep telling me that my file is read only. Do I need to do the above, or will I need to start all over again?
