Abductors have been around for centuries, its not a new thing. Its just these days you can get the word out about an abducted kid quicker by TV, radio, phone push messages, etc and make them "too hot to handle" (for want of a better phrase) than you could have done a century or two ago. But because of this ability to get a message out quickly, it tends to make people think "oh crap, its dangerous, I'd better not let Quentin Junior out as I may never see him again".

The kid is more likely if truth be told to get run over by a car or a bus than anything else, but you don't see people not driving around because they think "oh I might run over a kid, I wont go to work/shopping/cinema or whatever" - nobody (in their right mind) goes out just to run somebody over!
