British gas condemn boiler

Just looking for a bit of advice if possible! A British Gas engineer has condemned our 1978 Thorn Olympic boiler because he says the insulation panels at the side are deteriorating. He said the parts were obsolete, which we also found out after looking online. Apart from this the boiler runs perfectly. The boiler is in the garage and the engineer did say although he turned it off, there's the button to turn it on again when he had gone. I was wondering if anyone knew whether you could fit some other insulation rather than condemning and getting a new boiler? Seems a bit extreme to get a new boiler when apart from this there are no other issues?

You have done well to get 39 years out of that boiler, buy a new one.

I wish you wouldn't say condemn, Its a word that shouldn't be used when describing the condition of an appliance.

From what you said it looks like it has been classed as 'at risk'. Turned off at the controls for your safety as if it deteriorates any more then you could end up with an 'immediately dangerous' situation.

BG don't stock parts for longer than 7 years (at my last telling) so to hold parts for a 39 year old boiler is a tall ask.

Get an independent heating engineer to see if he/she can fix it. But like Sevenhills says, just buy a new one.

    Confused.com!

Your thread title says the boiler has benn condemned, yet the post indicates the boiler was simply turned off and you say you have been invited by the gas engineer to simply turn it back on again, and explained to you how.

If there was any issue with the boiler, then a warning notice should have
been fixed to the appliance. You can see the various warnings here:

Watch out for that "obsolete part , not available now " trick that BG especially play.
I remember Ann Robinson on BBC Watchdog hauling BG gas central heating boss up in the studio for allowing his men, local contracted men I believe, playing the same dirty trick.
BG scrapped a perfectly good boiler because "no part now available",then charged an old lady 6k for new boiler with a 6 to 10 year lifespan .
Ann Robinsons researchers found the part online in two or three suppliers in 5 mins.
BGs weak reply to that was " It was nt available in OUR warehouse of parts ".
Absolutely shocking sharp practice and I would nt be surprised if BG homecare are nt still up to their old dirty tricks
The same person appears to have asked the same question under different usernames
