Getting money back from the DPS

I used to have a buy to let flat, which had now been sold. The tenant who was in the flat stopped paying rent then when notice was served on him he disappeared. Both his mobile phone numbers are no longer connected and emails from his email address are bouncing back. He also left his employer and they have been unable to contact his next of kin.
He left the flat in a mess (photographs were taken and all evidence recorded in terms of costs for disposal of rubbish and repairs to damage caused).
I was trying to come to an agreement with him about the deposit, i.e. him getting a small portion back with the costs of damage etc taken off, however as I cannot make any contact with him at all does anyone know what happens with it or even if I can get any of it back?
It was protected in the DPS.

why have you not read the instructions on how the scheme operates?

I have read them and they have said that he needs to agree. However as I cannot contact him he cannot agree!0

2: have you actually evicted? I'd say no, in which case you are leaving yourself wide open to a very expensive law suit.0 -

You need to use the single claim process for when the other party can't be contacted.

The eviction process went through the courts and he was evicted. So I'm okay on that front0

You keep saying I have not read them but I can only state what it says on my DPS account after starting the process, and that is; awaiting tenants response. I must be missing something0

They will contact him on the detail he has provided. You have to wait x number of days by which if he has not responded (as it clearly will be the case), you can start the single claim process. It won't be straight forward but you'll get there in the end.
Their website does explain in detail the single claim process and what you will need to do.0
