MOT expired 4 months ago

Hey,

Got a new car Jan this year and for some reason at 4am today realised I didn't know when the MOT expired - checked online and turns out it was July this year.

I've booked in for MOT tomorrow AM to get it done asap, just wondered, as it's been 4 months I would assume no ANPR type things will have realised I don't have one? Otherwise surely i'd know by now? Also, will my certificate be 12 months from tomorrows date or will it be from expiry date? So 12 months from July or from tomorrow?

Thanks!

It sounds like you've been lucky and not got pinged by ANPR. In fact the most common way in which ANPR is used is in a police car - if it pings, they'd pull you over there and then. The new certificate will be dated from tomorrow.

I maybe wrong but I don't believe either the police or the DVLA operated static ANPR cameras actually trigger the issue of a penalty notice for having no MOT. So unless you were in the vicinity of a suitably equipped police car no-one would have picked it up.

I have done this twice now, albeit the lapse was only for a couple of weeks each time!

    Nothing came from it.

I have signed up for the MOT reminder service now on both cars and inputted the dates into the AA app on my phone!

Driving without an MOT in an otherwise road worthy car is minor offences, no points and a £100 FPN normally that it would have to be a very slow day (no uninsured drivers passing, no speeding, no mobile use etc etc) before plod would be bothered to pull you for it.
  • Lack of MOT is not considered a serious offence.

OP -if plod should pull you tell them that you are going to a pre-booked MOT, quite legal as long as you have booked it. And for repair after if necessary.

The date of the new MOT will be on the day.
