Hubby wants a laptop for Xmas. He's a light user. It will be for some basic browsing, and playing a few basic games on (not online gaming) and doing a few e-mails. Can anyone help me work out where to start with choosing please, don't want to spend more than I need to. Thanks. Oh and can't get a chromebook as there's a couple of old games (civnet and heroes of might and magic) that he wants and we can't get them for a chromebook.

The mim spec I'm suggesting for people at the moment is 8GB memory (4GB will do) and 256GB SSD (hard disks are yesterday's tech;) 128GB will do if you don't need any media space (pics, music, videos);
Many people also want FHD screens for some reason.
Prices are going up. Black Friday may have some deals.
e.g. for New ->
£450 (tell us if that is too high)

eg2. Cheaper lower spec but still good screen. £329

Piggybacking a little on to this, when it says Intel HD graphics are these actually any good for some games? DD wants to play warhammer total war and I see lots of laptops which say good for games with this, but in the past onboard chips like this are a bit rubbish for games? Is that still the case?0

No affiliation but if 50 % off discount price, it would be fine.
Let's stick grumpycrab's golden Rule 4-8GB Memory, 120-250GB SSD (NO thanks to Hard Disk at 2017)
MEMORY:
If you would buy select 4GB, demand 4GB x 1 (not 2GB x 2) - then you won't waste the existing memory for future upgrade,
SSD:
If you are happy with 120GB SSD, just upgrade from HARD DISK with £35 only
If you want to use bigger SSD, you need to upgrade it by yourself.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N5IB20Q
Kingston SSD A400 £60 for 240GB £101 for 480GB
If you just want to have a basic model, just get a 120GB SSD with £35, NEVER EVER SELECT HARD DISK. If Your budget is tight, get a cheaper model with £35 SSD upgrade.
Please please do NOT buy this kind of disposable model.

I know some people keep replacing this kind of c**p computer every 1-2 year, But you want to enjoy a great performance with long term use
Happy computing
