How to dim a mirror light fitting

Just installed a new Over the Mirror light fitting with razor plug in our bathroom which has an incredibly bright fluorescent tube fitted and lights up the room to the level of a Colditz style camp! It replaced an ancient 35 year old fitment that had a low light level which was just right for relaxing night time baths !
Any practical or even whacky ideas of how we can dim down and reduce the lighting level from it?
