Plumbing in Washing Machine - Waste Adapter

Hi all,

Need some advice please - recently moved and am attempting to plumb in a washing machine, but the sink trap doesn't have a waste pipe adapter for the washing machine - I've picked up a couple of different size fittings but neither fit. The 1" adapter seems like it should fit, but the screw-cap is too small to fit the trap. A 1 1/4" cap is too big. I'm very new to this, so am I missing something?

If there hasn't been something like that in place then fitting one is probably going to require a slight alteration to the waste pipe itself to accommodate the increased length of the trap, these can also interfere with a shelf in below the sink (if fitted).

Thanks for that, but the previous owner had a washing machine in the same place, and there's no other waste pipe where the hose could've gone. We've surmised that their movers took the adapter with them when they removed the old machine, so I think that there was one connected to the trap before. But I cannot work out why the standard adapter sizes (which are seemingly sold everywhere) wont fit...

Are there slightly different standards which would explain the slight difference in pipe size?

More modern wastes often use pretty standard fittings but older ones tend to be custom so you may have to bite the bullet and fit a new waste, not that expensive from the likes of Screwfix.
