Receiving random Paypal money

Three times I have now been sent a small amount of money from a stranger on Paypal. These have come from two different people who don’t seem to exist when I google search for them. The amounts are only small, a few pounds each. I wonder if this is somehow some convoluted scam? Does anyone have any ideas please?! I want to refund the money but I am concerned if giving away something about myself if I do?!

  • So if its a scam, how does it work, do they eventually ask you to be a money laundering mule, if you do happen to return the small amounts at start?

I don’t know, I know it sounds very odd! But it’s very odd that this has now happened three times. I know my passwords and email address have been compromised in the past (all changed now of course) but it’s very odd that I’ve been sent money from two different people who don’t seem to exist on the internet 3 times in about as many months. I refunded the first payment and now I’ve been sent something from a different name.

Thanks, I’ve not had any instructions to forward money to anyone though so they’re not doing a very good job!

Could be a scam however it is also possible that someone with a similar email address has given out the wrong information. A third party has subsequently 'paid' for something using paypal but like sending it to the wrong account number, the wrong email address is used.

You only need an email address to pay someone on paypal - get that wrong when you try and pay someone and your money goes astray if it matches an existing account.

Are any of the amounts the same and received recently?
