Different issue but changing your house locks won't cost a fortune and will make the keys they still have useless

Rather pointless, as they've already been changed. See post #1.

I'd say it would be unreasonable to withhold the claim due to a momentary lapse. You normally lock the door. Multiple people are responsible. In the endd it was an act of theft. This is not the same as leaving the keys in the ignition at a petrol station.

Someone entered your home to take the keys, a criminal act. I don't think occasionally not locking your front door counts as negligent.
And what about leaving you car keys in easy reach of said unlocked door.
  • It is worth noting that the insurers may attempt to deny claims, but the FCA may take a different view and expect a reasonable approach and if the insurers did deny the claim I would immediately complain and escalate to the FCA.

The FCA won't deal with complaints from individuals. Perhaps you mean the FOS (Financial Ombudsman Service)?

Regarding this thread, the insurer in question is best placed to answer will they cover this or not.

Better to leave the keys in an easy to find place than to risk someone coming into your bedroom for them, armed with a knife, adrenaline pumping through their veins, while you are laying there asleep

Just as an example, this is the wording from the Aviva policy exclusions - excludes keys left in the vehicle but nothing else:
    We will not pay for:
    (1) loss of use, wear and tear, deterioration, depreciation, or any loss or damage which happens gradually.
    (2) mechanical, electrical or electronic failure, breakdown or breakage.
    (3) computer and equipment failure or malfunction.
    (4) loss or damage arising from theft while:
    (a) the ignition keys of your vehicle have been left in or on your vehicle.
    (b) your vehicle has been left unattended with the engine running.

Halifax motor insurance (link is to a PDF) has similar exclusions:
    • Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft if the keys or lock
transmitter or entry card from the keyless entry system are left in or on the
car while it is left unattended.
    • Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft if the car is left
unattended without being properly locked and/or if any window, roof
opening, removable roof panel or hood is left open or unlocked.

Big difference between leaving the keys in an easy place to find and on the inside of an unlocked front door. ;)
  • As stated I didn’t realise the front door was unlocked. I wouldn’t intentionally leave my door unlocked knowing I have two young children in the house.
I can only assume it was unlocked due to hearing the door handle moving. Other set of keys from under stairs were also taken.

Seems to me that if they took keys from 2 different locations and nothing else, they may have known where to look.
