Need a new clutch

I'm clueless about cars, and really daunted by garages etc but my Fabia needs a new clutch (it's slipping badly and I can;t ignore it anymore) - how do I find a good garage and how do I know what's a good price? My main dealer quoted £600 - I'd REALLY like to do it cheaper.

    £600 for a clutch!!!:rotfl:

I had my old car which my garage told me was a complex clutch done for £240.

You are bein taken for a ride unless their are other issues attached to it.

Id be asking them for a list of exactly what needs done and then calling round other garages

Ill bet you find one who will do it for no more than £200-£300 if its just the clutch
  • Have had a look on line and nothing complex that I saw

Apparently clutch assemblies are about £100 and then maybe a few hours labour, so Im sure you'll find somewere to do it for £300 max.

Is it under warranty or anything that needs to be retained dealership wise?

Have a look in Yellow Pages, there are specialist clutch fitting companies that will do it cheaper than a main dealer.

Buy the part from a specialist, search around for them. Then get a local mechanic to fix it for you. Dont get conned by dealers!

For example my car has a big clutch, it's a bmw 323 2.5i; the part cost me £127 and my mechanic is charging me £150 labour. All in less than £280 and thats is a bmw. Ask local mechanics for labour and buy the part yourself.

Even Ebay may have clutch assemblies, get a quote of the price from the dealers on the part then shop around.
  • The thing is with modern cars, it may not be the clutch thats at fault. It could be the DMF, or dual mass fly wheel.

We often get cars with what appear to be slipping clutches, but turns out to be the DMF...

Get it checked out 1st by a few places.

Clutches are quite cheap, its just an !!!! dropping 'boxes lol
