In a real panic, I posted earlier today in the ebay section. A very kind responder there recommended that I come over and talk to you guys about whether there is a possibility that our whole PC set-up is at risk, or indeed whether our home and our personal safety is also compromised.
Please read my question there and if possible let me know a/ how did this happen and b/ what to do next!!

Could you copy and paste that post in here so as to not give people the trouble of having to go there.
thanks

Thought i'd help, this is the thread: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=574028
Just a thought- are you positive this email originated from Ebay and isn't a spoof?Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.0 -
Your main question seems to be
Is my PC compromised?
The answer to that is that it's quite likely.
Your second question was
What do I do about it?
First things first. Go change ALL you passwords. Do it now (you really should change them all regularly anyway).
Once you've done that, go to this thread and follow the instructions, completely. Calm should be restored after that.
Remember, lots of people to ask questions if you run into trouble!0 -
Thanks for that pumpa as, to answer martin57, I don't have a clue how to do that copy&paste magic!
Yes, we are pretty sure that the email is genuine as when we went to look over the previous couple of days ebay activity, there were the three automated (?) confirmations that 'our' items had been successfully listed. Today's email from ebay shows that they had deleted the items. We also had to confirm our password to ebay's admin team before we could do anything else. As a proper techie 'dimbo' I assume that to be a reasonable degree of proof.
I think my real concern is that a hacker may now have details of our home address etc. I'm here a lot on my own in the evenings and as we are very rural, it is my personal safety that bothers me the most. Am I right to be worried or am I just working myself into a bit of a state about nothing? Where do we go from here, please?
Edit to add - just spotted bingo bango's reply. Thank you for that and we will be following the advice now, if not sooner.0 -
I think PM is worried here that whoever accessed the ebay account may have got that info from their PC, in which case it may be compromised with a keylogger or similar.
As for your personal safety, don't worry about it. Remember that everyone you trade with on ebay already has your address. None of them come out to visit you now, do they?
This is likely some schmuk sitting in a cybercafe somewhere, and getting loads of ebay passwords from somewhere. It's not a vendetta against you personally!0
