I was in a similar situation when I moved in to a rented flat

Landlord had a pre-payment meter in case they got left with a former tenants bill (i'm not sure they would be liable for this).
They also had replaced the storage heaters with normal non-storage heaters. So I was really keen to change my meter.

Anyway I got EDF to give me a credit meter (landlord was OK with this) and EDF installed it free. I asked installer when he was changing my meter to a smart meter but he said he had taken some back out after installation. The reason being, he said, was as you pay the correct amount this varies over the year, whereas a monthly bill keeps it to a similar amount each month, so no peaks and troughs.

Early on in discussions with the the EDF I think that you had to have at least a quarter of your electricity usage overnight (other fig on MSE was 27% I think) to make it worthwhile to go day/night rate. But your electricity supplier might tell you.

Since then I've just used the money web sites to change supplier.

  • I was in a bit of a panic yesterday and felt a bit clueless with regards to managing my electricity bills. Maybe I'm a bit naive at present wishing I was back home with mum using a gas boiler!

I'll do a bit more research and speak with EDF to be changed to a credit meter (my landlord is happy with this). I know my bills currently will not reflect usage over a longer period as the night immersion is broken awaiting repair so I'll wait for a while to establish accurate electricity usage.

Many thanks for all your replies, you've been a huge help :)
