I'm assuming when you say apple compatible it has to work with iPhone.

i see a lot of watches on wowcher etc and wonder how they compare and yes meant iphone

Start is your budget for smart watch and phone .
Apple products are more expensive than others .

The more expensive apple watches are the latest and from 2 years back. I don't know if you'd be able to maximize apple's features with a different watch other than theirs. But I got a 1st gen apple watch and it's way cheaper but totally of equal performance than the new ones. My advice is don't update the software if you ever get the older apple watches as it'll slow them.
