Train and hotel question please

Options
Hi I'm soon to be going to Fife and my ticket says to change trains at haymarket Edinburgh, could I just change at waverly instead which is the end of the line? Or do I have to change at haymarket? And do you have to get off the station you've booked to or can you get off at the one after or before etc?

The lady at booking told me to do that coming back because I want to sit near the luggage rack to keep an eye on my suitcase. I hate travelling alone

Also does anyone know any good not too expensive hotels / B&Bs near to the St Andrews area of Fife please? I've looked at the premier inn but it's all booked for my dates it seems

Where are you coming from? I'd expect you are coming up the West Coast in which case Haymarket will be the first Edinburgh station you reach

If the ticket is booked to Haymarket you might not get through the barrier at Waverly.

You can get off before your destination but after may be considered fare dodging.

You can sit near the luggage to watch your suitcase what ever stop you get off at.

I'm coming from Preston. I'm useless at travel and changing trains just don't want to have to leave my suitcase and go sit somewhere else

I booked though train line if I could have chosen waverly I would have I'm not trying to dodge one stop paying when my tickets already cost me £104

The woman I spoke to at the train station said coming back (as I don't have a reserved seat) that I could get off at waverly as thats the end of the line so the new train down would be filling from new.
It's been so long since I was on a train I'm panicking over my suitcase as I'll have valuables in it and won't leave it.

My outward journey from Preston I've reserved a seat supposedly near a luggage rack, would there be someone on the train to tell me where this seat is? Stupid simple question I know but as I said I don't travel usually.

Also my return ticket is an open return, I don't have to book what train I'm on do I? I can just get on any off peak train back?

Is it a Virgin train ? If so there are descriptions of the different train types / seating layouts here.

When you get on the platform at Preston the indicator board should show if the first class is at the back or fornt of the change so you can work out appropximately where on the platform your coach will be when the train stops. There are also indicator panels by the sides of the train doors that show the coach letter and the clsest seat numbers (so the panel by the door at one end one end of Coach C will say e.g. seats 1-32, and the other end 33-64). When you get onto the train the seat numbers are displayed on indicators on the luggage racks above the seats. It will also show if the seat is reserved or available

There is a train manager on the train but they may not be easily locatable - better to try to find your carriage / seat yourself or ask other passengers nearby

    Yes you can
  • Thank you for taking the time to give advice.

It'll be a transpennine express from Preston and then a scotrail train from Edinburgh.

My anxiety is peaked with travelling alone and I've never done this far on a train before and changes.

Are you allowed to stand near the luggage racks if there's no seats near if you want or do you have to sit somewhere?

God it'll be a miracle if I actually get myself there and not totally lost

I think transpennine express trains are usually only three carriages long (sometimes two three carriage trains together), so quite easy to locate your coach.

You can stand if you want to, but it's a long way ! Can you not keep valuables in a smaller bag (e.g. laptop bag) that you could keep by your feet / on your lap or in the overhead luggage racks immediately above your seat and just have non-valuables in anything larger that needs to go on the luggage rack.

Can you do search on Trainline for travelling via Waverley. There is an option at put that in the search.

You may find the ticket is dearer to do that. In which case you may have problems at Waverley.

If it the same price then there may not be a problem.
