Cheque paid into wrong account

  • Dont forget that closed accounts get recycled and given to new customers...sort code and account number.

    How long since you closed the account...you may well find its live and active just with someone else name.
  • Was closed last January. But if that was the case, hopefully Santander would know that when I informed them of the mistake and it might be then easier to try and recover the payment from one of their own customers?

    Did you know, for example, that your bank account could be “second-hand”? Very little information is available on this, but it is understood that banks typically wait at least three years before recycling closed account details. Clydesdale has confirmed that once one of its accounts has been closed for four years, both the number and sort code can be given to a new customer.



    Not all banks do this – HSBC doesn’t, and neither does Santander.

    The OP should write to Santander with such evidence as he has that the cheque was processed.

    Really no Bank should..but i know Barclays do and i know that when an account is re-opened it can trigger payments to that account,to start again even though they must have been dormant for X amount of years.:(

    There must be a very simple trail to follow..if the bank can be bothered.?

    I did consider posting that link but think it will only tell you if the sort code and account number are valid, rather than whether the account is still active.

    As OP already knows the numbers are valid, I didn't bother.

    Does anyone know the answer?
