Looking for best holiday to Greece

Ive never been to Greece and my b/friend and I want to go now in early Sept.
I decided to be very picky about where we go as I have been reading about horror package holidays etc and im now scared!
Also, I want to go to one of the islands and need help in chosing one. Most important factor should be the beach, i'd like it to look like a tropical island, like the malidives or something. Also would love traditional greek houses, whitewashed with blue windows - lovely!!
Which way is best to book, package holiday or flight and accommodation on their own...
any ideas would be great.!

hi
we went to skiathos last year which was beautiful and the beaches were lovely. not the cheapest of greek islands but quite unspoilt we also went on a boat trip to skolopos and allonosis (not sure of the spelling!) which are fantastic and so unspoilt with lemon trees and all the little white and blue houses they are both very quite islands and only reached (as far as i know ) by boat
you also see loads of dolphins between the islands, fab place0 -
Oh, I love Greece :) We also went to Skiathos last year and loved it. Having been to Kefalonia, Corfu, Ithaca, Rhodes and Zakynthos, I think it was my favourite greek holiday so far.
Skiathos is very small, but it is a beachlovers
paradise...I wouldn't say it looks exactly like the Maldives, ( it's Greece, after all) but plenty of clean sandy beaches with lovely blue sea. We went in June & it wasn't too crowded, so September should be similar. And another thing I noticed...no 'lager lout' types there. It's definitely geared up for tourism, but it's not a tacky place ( well I didn't think so!)
For nightlife, each little resort has several bars, and there are quite a few nightclubs on the waterfront in Skiathos town. The town is quick & easy to get to from any resort on the excellent & cheap bus service, and they even run at night.
It certainly is one of the prettiest islands, though don't expect the traditional white "sugar-cube" houses on all the post cards. They give the impression that all Greek houses look like that, but they don't. You have to go to Mykonos for that.
All the islands are beautiful, but in different ways. I also really enjoyed Corfu, that was very green & pretty & not as "touristy"as I was expecting. If you go in late september the weather may be starting to change a little in the Ionian islands. Southerly places like Rhodes or Crete will still have great beach weather well into October, but can become very barren-looking over the summer months because of the heat.
We went with Golden Sun holidays which are one of the cheaper specialists to Greece. I'd definately use them again. Also good are Kosmar. If you are on a tight budget, both are significantly cheaper than going with someone like Thomson or First Choice, and because they are mainly Greek specialists, you get a much wider selection of islands.
Would you consider the Greek mainland? If you're not looking for loads of bars & clubs, Pelion is very pretty. It's opposite Skiathos on the mainland. so similar scenery, & beaches, but less developed.
This website might be of use; it's run by a very knowledgable young lady who does the walking tours of Skiathos town. & one of the boat trips from Skiathos to Skopelos.

My partner and I went to Sifnos a couple of years ago.
It is the most beautiful island, totally unspoilt with fantastic scenery.

That depends how long you are going for. If only for a week or 2 weeks, then package is probably the best. We have been many times to Rhodes - Lindos in particular but it is very commercialised. Crete is our favourite island and you can get off the beaten track to real greek villages quite easily if you have a car. The hospitality is second to none and they are very honest people. For white houses and blue roofs, Santorini is the place to go. Just like it looks in the postcards but think it is a little expensive. Try www.airflights.co.uk for flight only. You will always get accommodation in the Greek islands - they will be waiting for you when you get out of the taxi or off the boat!0

We have visited over 40 islands in the last dozen or so years - I certainly recommend avoiding the package tourist traps, and going independently - book the flights and accomodation on the web (or leave accomodation until you get there!). We always get a cheap flight to Athens (Easyjet go there, and BA have lowered their prices to compete - Aegean fly from Stanstead and are also competatively priced) - then get to the desired island using the local ferries (a bus goes direct from the airport to the docks). This works out about 30% cheaper than equivalent holidays in the brochures, but is arguably better value for money.
I can also recommend Sifnos. I can also recommend two other islands nearby - Milos and Serifos. Milos is a bit like Santorini (not quite as dramatic scenery wise, but still the remains of a volcano, but is also much cheaper and sees considerably fewer tourists). Serifos is a beach island - recommend do a google.
As Scotham says, there is no shortage of accomodation, especially in September outside high season, so you could find somewhere when you arrive - owners meet the boats to tout there rooms, there are "rooms" signs up around town, and there is usually a tourist kiosk which will ring around and find something suitable if you do get stuck! My partner and I went to Sifnos a couple of years ago.
