Diesel cars shutting off at traffic lights etc
I was always told with driving diesel cars (mainly older ones), when you get to your destination let the car idle for a moment to allow the turbo to cool down before shutting off.
Just had a thought with our new car... it has the automatic shut off mode when in a traffic jam, pressing the clutch starts it again.
Is there a risk of wearing/affecting the turbo out with this?
Is letting the turbo cool down now considered old hat?

If you're in a traffic jam, the turbo won't be hot.
The advice to idle is when you've been working the engine hard - motorway, towing, uphill etc. I'd still recommend letting it idle then.0 -

It's old hat. Discussed this recently on a stop/start thread. Modern cars have devices to ensure that bearings are properly lubricated, and may circulate oil even when the engine is stopped at the end of a journey.
Stop/start doesn't just kick in in jams, you may have hammered down a country lane and reached a junction, or pulled off a motorway junction and reached a junction so stop/start does have to cope with a hot turbo.
Both our diesels sometimes whirr for a while after stopping.0 -
Nice one, cheers!0
