Made payments to the wrong account, what can I do?

I've been paying my Santander credit card off from my Bank of Scotland account using the 09-00-99 0100007 account details with my credit card number as the case reference. I'd been doing this for a while as a standing order.

Last month, I got a call to say that I'd not made my payment. I made another payment using the usual details.

I've checked this month and four payments made to the Santander Credit card details have not been received, for £400 total. I checked closely, and on my statements from Bank of Scotland the reference number has changed, it looks like a generic reference, so it hasn't reached my account.

Have I any chance of getting this money back? It's obviously gone to santander, but will they acknowledge that? I'm such an idiot, I'm suicidal as it is. I can't afford to lose this money.

    Account number should be 01000007 (extra zero in the middle), but I guess you just missed a zero when you typed it here. :)

    An account number that wasn't eight digits long would almost certainly have been rejected.

    For some odd reason Lloyds, Halifax and BoS don't show the actual reference you supplied on statements and substitute it for something else. Presumably, an internal reference number.

    If I were you I'd contact BoS and ask them what reference I supplied when I made the payments. Perhaps you accidentally change it before you made your payment.

    I would then contact Santander with the information. The payments are probably sitting in one of their holding accounts and haven't been assigned to your credit card account. If you give them their details about the payments they should be able to assign them to your account.

    Ask BoS to do a trace on the funds.

    The sort code and account number are for a Santander account so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to find out where the money went.

    If not, Santander will know where it went.
  • Thanks people, you've calmed me down a lot! I'll make some calls tomorrow and get this sorted out. Just couldn't believe it when I realised and panicked.
