I just bought a desert from the Co-op but it turns out it's not suitable for vegetarians - is that legit grounds to take it back?
BTW - anyone else think the 'not suitable for vegetarian' labels are getting a lot smaller?

A bit confused:
Is your point that you bought it and then noticed the ' not suitable ' notice because it's so small?0 -
I would assume that any processed food was unsuitable for vegetarians unless it had a message or logo indicating the it was suitable.0

You say desert so a chilled item right ?
How has it been stored ?
If a chilled item how has it been stored, the store wont be able to guarantee its been stored correctly so will dispose of it.0 -
Anyone with any dietary requirement, whether allergy, intolerance, religious or personal choice is responsible for checking if the product is suitable in a shop. As long as it is on the label then the product producer has done their bit.
If space is limited, the allergy information should be prioritised over other information.Zebras rock0 -
The problem with labelling now is that so much has to be shown on the label that it is getting smaller & smaller.
To the point of being unreadable.0 -
If I were a veggie I'd be especially wary of desserts as many use animal products as the setting gels.
I think you need to be more aware if you're going to be vegetarian. You didn't look, you didn't check ... your fault.
However - these days I've noticed that retailers do seem to bend under the slightest of pressure, so you might as well "complain" as they'll most likely just send you vouchers anyway .... this is a modern change of retailers' behaviour that it's worthwhile pursuing "in case" you get lucky.0 -
Its probably listed Gelatine (normally pork or beef) in the ingredient dec as well.0

I though all vegetarians checked the ingredients not rely on the manufactuers telling them if it is suitable or not!
It will be like the nuts soon and we will have meat sold with "not suitable for vegetarians" on the packet0 -
I am veggie and I do check the labels, it is amazing what they put parts of animals into for example aldi brown sauce contains fish extract. But it does make life easier if it states whether it is suitable for vegetarians saves a lot of reading.Sealed pot challenge member 4370

I looked at a small desert in the co op recently and it actually stated "not suitable for vegetarians" which surprised me. Isn't food normally marked as suitable for vegetarians or unmarked.0
