This just a little moan , and indirect help to others who may or may not know about the joy of software updates . I know some will say
‘Android is better’ etc but despite my murmurs I will stay with Apple for now . So now onto the heading above :

I did the above as it was the biggest upgrade in the history of the iPhone and iPad thus far . So far so good . Looks nice and glossy etc
Then when travelling on a 2 hour journey into London ,I realise that all of my music has been erased from my iPhone ( and of course iPad)
The music that remains is the music purchased from iTunes Store .
Nothing else . As a friend of mine sent me an album as a present that means I had one album to last me the entire journey . Thanks Apple .
The only other bit of good news is that the u 2 album is gone .

So I contacted support . After what seemed to be an hour , there is nothing they can do . The only way I can get my music back is to buy a new Apple computer. I will be buying a new iMac in the next week or so, as my Mac mini from 2007 is no longer fit for purpose. Except maybe playing the current iTunes library I have .
Home sharing is not compatible with iPhone se/ iPad mini 4 via 10.6( snow leopard)
Thankfully I still buy CDs .

One other thing: iCloud backup . I advise you to turn it off unless prompted . Why? I charge my iPad overnight . This morning the iPad backed up and I wasn’t made aware of it doing so. This means my music downloads are definitely gone . According to the nice lady at Apple support, if I never had the backup switched on my music would’ve been saved.
It won’t be much inconvenience to create a new playlist ..when I get my new iMac!
Sorry if I’m rehashing something that may have been mentioned ..but just in case :)

If phone users do not back up there content elsewhere then advising them not to use icloud back up is terrible advice.

If content is critically important then the minimum back up requirements is for that content to be on a second local device (either computer or external hard drive) and also have it off site too (either in the cloud or on a device at a second location)

If content is not critically important then go with whatever backup method is the most convenient and frictionless.

There is always a risk when updating a computer device of something going wrong whether on Mac, IOS, Windows or android so really the end user has to decide what the trade off is in making sure their content is backed up properly and ease of use.

Its a pain when something goes wrong but not having enough music to play is a first world problem. Also strange that U2 album was still kicking around when you could have removed it as far back as 2014?

I thought the point of a backup was to, well, backup ... are you saying that iCloud uses a mirror approach, so if something is gone from the device it gets deleted from iCloud?

I thought the same . Of course we need to backup regularly , but as my backup was constantly on the backups erased the previous backups etc. My photos are still on both decvices .
In all honesty , I think apart from the bug fixes Apple want only their purchases on all of their computers so you end up buying stuff again.
I’m just quoting what was said to me :)

So it did not erase stuff you cannot buy from them (your photos) but did erase stuff that you could have but did not buy from them. :o

I take it you mean to rip the songs from CD again?
  • Apparently , the music from my Mac mini can be transferred over to my new iMac when I get it . I’ll enquire again to clarify

    There's this method:

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204318

Out of interest you're not using Apple Music at all are you?

    Thanks .

    No problem.

Just wondered re: Apple Music as I'm a current subscriber and find it has the habit of losing tracks I've downloaded to play offline now and again, that's all.
