We didn't have sugar butties but I do remember Fairy Bread - a slice of buttered white bread covered in hundreds and thousands. Not folded though.0

A slice of bread can still be cut from a loaf it does not necessarily have to come from a package as we buy from the shops today.
As you seem to be from Lancashire would you still call something on a barmcake a butty, e.g. a cheese butty, or a cheese barm? Me and my husband are both from around that region and we would have called it a cheese barm hence me saying that a butty has to be on a slice of bread.0 -

Told the lady what i wanted, called it a bun, she said oh you mean a "barmcake".
I looked at her for a second thinking is this lady taking the piddle out of me or what. No i mean a bun. She maintained, "barmcake".
Ok then, whatever makes you feel better, i'll have it
Had never heard of it before ever & this town is only 5 miles away. I've only ever heard of it used in that town too.0 -

That's my understanding too.0 -

A butty is a slice of bread with the fillìng in the middle and the slice folder over. A sandwich is two slices of bread with filling in the middle which is normally cut in two but could be left intact and would still be a sanwich.
If the filling is chips or crisps then it is a butty.
If it makes a difference, I am East Midland, Leicester0 -

No, because they're likely to prevent the banjo part of the name from happening.
And they are Egg & Bacon Banjos.
Once you get to such delicacies as Egg, Bacon and Sausage or Black Pudding (plus ketchup, HP, chilli and English Mustard - and maybe onions) in a lump of French stick, you're then eating a Roadkill.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
