Whatsapp wanting me to pay £0.99 to continue membership?

Options
I downloaded Whatsapp a good while ago, years ago. I'm pretty sure you used to have to pay for it before it became a free app and i can't remember if i ended up paying for it back then since it's been that long.

Today i get a message from Whatsapp saying
Your subscription has expired. To verify your account and purchase a lifetime subscription for just 0.99GBP simply tap on this link

And they provide something to click on.

Question is whether that's a scam or not. If not then why am i having to pay for it? Like i said i've had Whatsapp for years now and i may have even paid for it when i first got it.
