Decking stain vs oil

I give my decking 2 coats of whatever every year. I still don't know the difference between oil & stain. I would have thought stain penetrated the wood but it seems not to go into the wood at all.So what is the difference?
Also - any tips for getting more than 2 years out of 1 or 2 applications. I've always used fairly expensive treatments (Sadolin was the last) but wonder if they are any better than the cheaper brands.
The deck is the main exit from the rear of the house.

Nice to save.

I've been using Wilko decking oil because it's easy to apply, gives a nice finish, soaks into the wood, and is a reasonable price. But it needs doing every year.
I've just used Sadolin for the first time, hoping it will last much longer. Looking forward to hearing other people's experiences.0 -
Look up "Schaeffers Deck Sealant" on YouTube.
If you're easily offended don't look it up.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
What are your reasons for treating your decks? I have decking and apart from cleaning it I don’t ‘treat’ it.0
