Elapsed store gift vouchers

My wife just informed me that in amongst her hoarded stuff she came across a number of gift vouchers from M&S and other retailers which have elapse - up to a year ago in some cases.

Is the any advice as to what she can do?

It will depend on the store to be honest. The store isn't obliged to give you another credit note/gift card to replace the ones that have expired, but some stores will if you go to the Customer Service Desk.

If the Customer Service Desk people can't or won't play ball (and they don't have to/may be under instruction not to), it's worth contacting Head Office of the outfit concerned and pleading your case via them, especially if you have lots of vouchers.
  • My mum has just called me all upset as she said she was made to feel like dirt in our local M&S for asking for her expired gift card to be extended.

They gave her a number to call, they wrote it down wrong.

She is 75 years of age & has Parkinson’s, she simply forgot she had it.

M&S won’t be getting any more of my business.

You need to write to the CEO and tell them what happened - their staff should be trained to deal with anyone with something like Parkinsons.

    Trained in what way?
They (I assume) gave the no. of the dept who deal with this. I doubt store staff can extend gift vouchers beyond expiration.

Unless she told them she has Parkinson's, they may have been unaware.

In what way did they treat her like dirt china?

As much as I want to be sympathetic, your mum (just like everyone else) isn't entitled to an extension of the vouchers.

AND a 75 year old with Parkinson's probably wouldn't understand what is going on like me or you would, so may have been some misinterpretation as to how she was treated (or how politely they told her "no").

I'd recommend that you write/call head office and ask for an extension, but aside from that they are meeting their contractual obligations here and I personally wouldn't deem that grounds to stop using them in the future...

Gift cards shouldn’t expire if you are old or have Parkinson’s. I’m sure it’s in the terms and conditions somewhere...

I find it very hard to believe that someone from M&S's customer services dept would be anything but sympathetic and apologetic to a 75 year old. Treating people like dirt is not something I believe they would do.

Tell her to ask them if they will extend.

Then prepare tin helmet and lots of sympathy when they say tough luck.
