won't someone please save my stuffing?

Options
I was planning on trying a few stuffing recipes ready for christmas so I baked a loaf of bread. My yeasts a little out of date. It was fine last week when I made a loaf by hand but this was a bread machine loaf, and I've made a bread-scented door stop. Can I use it anyway, or is just fit for the bin?

You're planning on shredding it to make stuffing anyway aren't you?

I'd be tempted to take a cheese grater to it and try a small batch.

If that doesn't work then you could have a look around for the nearest duck pond and make a - low carb - picnic?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Broadly speaking, it will be fine for stuffing as long as it is only a small part of the whole. So I would use it with, say lots of parsley, sage, apple, walnuts, celery onion etc.
That will rescue the stuffing to use now, but won't of course, provide a definitive guide for Xmas! However, if you have space, and it's OK, I'd freeze the rest, as it'a always useful- sometimes just for adding crunch to savoury topping.
And I am fanatical about yeast, not sure if yours was in a packet or tin. I use a tin as I make a lot of bread, but if I haven't used it by 3 weeks after opening will chuck it. What I have found is that sometimes it will seem OK, and the first rising is fine, but it won't have enough 'oomph' for the second rising. I also find that a bread machine is less forgiving as you can't judge what is happening.

Could you try cutting it into small cubes, mixing with some oil and chopped garlic and baking in oven for about 15 minutes to make garlic croutons?
We save up all our loaf crusts and do this.
  • I'd just soak it in Earl Grey Tea with some dried fruit and spices and make bread pudding out of it.

In the meantime, test your yeast before you throw it. Put 1 part boiling and two parts cold water into a jug. Add some sugar and then some yeast, leave it for 10 minutes to see whether it starts working.

If it doesn't, use it in slug traps in the garden. If it does, you could still use the yeast for baking if you start to get it working before you add it into handmade items.

Oh, and don't take this personally - are you absolutely certain you remembered to add the yeast in the first place? It's not beyond the realms of possibility that you were distracted and forgot after taking it out of the cupboard...

  • I'm sure it'll be fine, but if you're worried about it just slice it & use it for toast instead, it will certainly be ok for that.

Don't give white bread to ducks it's not good for them, I've forgotten why just now,( brain fog) but a quick google will most likely let you know why

Thanks all. I tried to breadcrumb it and it looked very dough-ish and not all tasty so I'm afraid it went in the bin (not very moneysaving!). Will try harder next time :D
