strange vibration

Hi, one for all you mechanics out there .

I have a strange vibration that seems to come from the front of the car and feeds up through the steering wheel. Even the front passenger can feel it. Normally happens at about 60-70 mph and is quite bad.

The car is a 1995 honda prelude 2.2vtec 4ws.

I had two new front tyres fitted in June, balaced, 4ws tracking done. All okay and it passed the MOT with flying colours on Monday 8th October 07.

It normmaly happens on the same area of a dual carriage way that I use and at around 60-70mph. At slower speeds the car is very smooth, typical old Honda.

I mentioned it to the MOT mechanic, he test drove it but could not find a prob and further checks on suspension, steering etc for the MOT did not highlight a problem.

At a loss !! - could it be a combination of tyre pressures & balacing etc.

Any help appreciated.
Dave

    Did he drive it above 60 - 70 ?

Sounds like wheel balancing, maybe you lost a weight off the wheel. Have the wheels balanced again.

It could be the road urface, just where you mention it - does it change from trmac to concrete & one more uneven than the other.

Obviousley if the problem is there, at the same speed, on other roads too, it's down to the vehicle.

So you need a check of...

    wheel nuts not loose

    any bulges/deformation of the tyres

    re-do wheel balance

After that, look at suspension bushes & components.

    Hi all,

Following the advice, after checking for damage, bulges, loose nuts etc I had all 4 wheels balanced and this resolved the problem in full. The steering is now smooth and vibration free through all speeds.

Its surprising how much of a difference wheel balancing has made.

    Many thanks
    Dave
