Could an insurance broker get me a cheaper car insurance deal?

Hi

Car Insurance has come up for renewal. First cheapest quotes are 320 quid, up from 250 for the same cover a year ago. I'd heard prices had risen, but this seems hefty over 25% up! Could it be because I've just turned 40 and am thus deemed a bigger risk? Or is everyone seeing similar?

Then another problem. In a gust of wind last January, I managed to let go of my door and bash the side of a Porsche parked next to me, leaving a small dint, but a claim value of 2,700 quid (unbelievable I know). When I entered this detail into the comparison sites, my best price went up further to 380. Not a surprise as guess I'm a bigger risk, but hard to take when it wasn't even a driving accident, just bad luck on a very windy day (to let go of the door, and be parked next to a new Porsche!!! - tip for readers, don't park next to flash cars....).

So - are these things I just have to put up with, or do I have options to save money? I was thinking, maybe a car insurance broker might know some ways to get a cheaper deal / firms who might take the non-driving nature of my claim into account? If so, are there any good broker firms people could recommend that they've used, hard to find via google? Or would it be worth speaking to providers direct to explain the above?

Many thanks for your help!

When playing with quotes and omitting parts of your history (ie you tell us you initially applied without giving details of the fault claim against you) you need to do these quotes as dummy quotes.

If you used your real details then the insurers have anti fraud software which flags all false applications, and are known to load premiums when spotting such manipulations

Follow the MSE guide to cheap car insurance (link in quick links at the top of the page) and try local brokers (not swinton) as well.

Or dont let go of your door on a windy day. Then you dont need to make a claim at all :)

  • Ha ha, thanks Quentin. Just for the avoidance of doubt the initial cheaper quote was the one automatically generated when I signed back into the price comparison site (it remembered my details from last year, and just generated quotes automatically). I obviously put the details in of the claim to re-run the quote with correct details.

Take the point about anti-fraud spotting technology and so on, but do you think doing what I did might have loaded the price though, really?
