VED by Direct Debit?

Maybe a daft question, however having had my car written off, other party admitted blame before we go off on a tangent, I need to buy another car, to give me a couple of hundred pounds more to play with, can I set up a monthly direct debit and pay in monthly instalments immediately for a new to me car or do I initially have to buy 6 or 12 months, the reason I ask is because I've not been in this position before, my written off car was only £20 a year and the car I had before that I'd owned for a year or so before the system changed?
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
