New build hob not as promised

We viewed our new build flat yesterday and were pretty happy with it with the exception of one major thing, which is that the hob in the kitchen is not an induction hob but an normal electric hob.

When we were shown around the show flat we were told we would be getting an induction hob. When I got home I noticed the brochure said gas hob, so I sent an email querying this and got an email back saying this:

“I can confirm the hob is NOT a gas hob but is an induction / electric hob instead. The printing online is incorrect.”

When I was viewing my flat the lady showing me round was not forthcoming about the hob not being induction and I had to push her to admit it wasn’t. She kept irritatingly telling me that “you can use induction pans on it though”...but that’s completely missing the point of an induction hob!

In the grand scheme of things it’s not an enormous issue and I can live with it, but I do feel lied to and I wonder what leg I have to stand on if I were to demand they install an induction hob? I am now annoyed at myself that I didn’t stamp my feet more yesterday and write it down as an official snag. Would it be too late for me to do this?

Why would it be too late?

Write to them and state that they clearly stated an induction hob would be installed but the one fitted is not an induction.

Ask them to replace it with the induction hob which they advised you in writing would be provided.

Thanks. I imagine they will try and wriggle out of it but it is worth a try. I wondered if it was too late because I did the snagging yesterday and submitted it to them and signed it (stupidly) so I wonder if they will now not accept my complaint.
Confusingly what’s installed is not a gas hob or induction hob, just an electric hob!

    Doesn't sound like a gas hob . . . ;)

  • It should be a very simple to change, ask them.

Yes sorry, I was looking at the part where you mentioned a gas hob.

    I have amended my post!

Thanks all, you’ve given me the confidence to send an email stating my demands! I hope that they just immediately cave and decide to replace it

That wording doesn't read to me as if they are guaranteeing to provide an induction hob. What you have is an electric hob which seems to be in line with what they have written in the email.

so they confirmed in writing they would not fit a gas hob

in writing they also said "induction / electric"

any request you make now will be down to whether they wish to show you some goodwill as that statement is perfectly capable of being read as:
    a) what you think it meant: will will fit an induction hob (which by definition is not gas powered as it is electrically powered)
    or
    b) what they may have meant: we may alternatively fit an electric hob (which, by implication, may not be an induction one otherwise we would have said induction hob, not induction/electric hob (hence the /)
