If you don't mind me asking, who do you insure your dog with? I'm not anti pet insurance but I would like to know that if I bought it and needed it the insurer would pay out promptly as your insurer seems to do.

My claims were made to AXA who no linger do pet insurance. they passed us to NCI. who agreed to cover pre existing conditions. In view of the previous claim for the torn cruciate and the probability of the other leg being affected ( 60% chance) we are stuck with NCI.

The first people to renew with the had very high increases in premiums- up to £100 s per month. We had just renewed before the switch so it was 11 months before our renewal. By that time premiums were reasonable. Our premium hasn't changed much over the years and last year actually went down.

I have claimed from NCI but recently had to contact them as the DD didn't get taken. The phone was answered after 3 rings. I was passed to some else who answered after 2 rings. My query was dealt with quickly and efficiently by someone who knew exactly what was what.

If I had free choice i would go for Petplan. A previous dog was insured with them and my vet did the claiming. I only paid the excess direct to him .

I would never bother with dog insurance after some past really bad experiences with insurance companies. I have put £5K into a special bank account for my puppy and adding to it at £50 a month. I realise some procedures may cost more than £5K, but that's a risk I'm prepared to take. I refuse to contribute to rip off insurance comanies' porfits. Third party cover is provided by my membership of the Dogs Trust.
This is exactly what I've done after dealing with the same bs when my Boxer dog took ill. It's a huge finanical commitment raising that kind of cash and storing it away; but it's there for pet treatment if I need it, and if I don't need to dip into it, then I've saved a fortune long-term.
