Hey google ........................

This morning I bought a google home mini. Unpacked it, installed the correct app on my mobile, the item searched and found the wifi and linked, entered wifi password.............................after four attempts, it failed. I tried again, with the password letter visible, no luck. I then installed the app on my ipad and tried, no luck so took it back for full refund, but not before printing off comments about how problematic this is.

I'm now wondering about the amazon version. Would you expect the same to happen?. No-one please say "with your luck...............".

I have three mini's and a Home hub running and had no problem setting any of them up. No one else I know that has bought one has had any problems. So, maybe not that problematic.
Perhaps you should have just exchanged it, rather than just taking it back.
Normally I would have just suspected the app, but you seemed to have ruled that out. So, maybe, just a duff unit.

You don't think it's anything to do with my anti-virus do you? I have McAfee in laptop and galaxy A5 phone. My s-i-l linked them to his account as it's about £80 per yr, otherwise I would have used a free one.

I would still like the google version. The thing is, Argos no longer accept some items back, especially anything internet related.

You can always temporarily disable your AV while setting up the Mini?

AV on an Android phone is essentially pointless.

I doubt if it was your AV, but, as DoaM points out, you can just disable it to try.
I think you'll find that if you take hardware back to Argos that doesn't work they will exchange or refund. They probably won't exchange opened software packages though.

  • Strange, as this support page suggests that the app can auto fill the WiFi

This is true if you have a phone with Lollipop or above installed.
