How long back can you claim PPI?

Does anyone know how long ago can you claim for PPI?

I had PPI on loans & cards previously but cancelled it on all products around 2000 when it was pointed out it wasn't worth the money. I had taken it out originally as I was under the impression that you needed it to get the loan or credit / store card and it did cover the repayments to those loans & cards when I was unemployed for around 8 months in the early 1990's. Even when I went back to being a full time student between 1993 & 1996 I continued to pay the PPI.

My wife thinks I should see if I could make a claim but I'm not sure how far back you can go and, even if I could claim for the years that I had it, I would be struggling to remember which companies I had it with.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

For brokers and third parties, it's 2005. That date doesn't apply to direct lenders, but the chances of anyone having records is virtually zero for anything in the last century.
  • Thanks xz81, I always had credit direct with lenders but think it was probably too long ago to do anything about claiming for PPI.

I am in a similar position. I am just going to send some letters anyway, in the hope something comes up trumps. If not, I'll have only lost the price of a stamp or two!

In the unlikely event won a mis-sale complaint, anything paid out, would be be deducted from any recompense and it does make your allegation of mis-sale awkward to prove. You knew about it in the 90's and it paid out as it should.

Ah, a bit of a problem.

This is unfair to genuine complainants. You should thoroughly research any "complaint" first.

Why is it unfair? If it's not genuine in the end, there will be nothing to repay. It's not as though other claimants will be penalised by an incorrect claim.

FOS have reported that almost 50% of PPI "complaints" received by banks are from people who didn't even have the insurance. It's unfair to tie up the complaint handlers with such complaints because it penalises those with genuine concerns who then wait much longer as a result..

You need to remember who you had i with because no one else has records going that far back, Your credit report only shows active credit or credit from the last six years,
Single premium is a good reason for loans,

Some banks will have records for credit cards dating back to the early 90s and in some rare cases dating back to the late 70s. It's always worth looking into as long as you don't expect to be successful.

Do you know who the accounts were with?

Of course records from the 1970's will be of no use to anyone wanting to complain about PPI, which was only retailed from the late 1980's!
