Best way to insure car for me and my 17yr old daughter

Hi!
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me, I'm totally confused by car insurance! Currently I drive a belingo van and my daughter has just started her lessons. I am going to get rid of the van and buy a small car (thinking VW Fox or Polo, budget £1500) which we can then share.
Should we add her to my insurance or does she need a new driver policy with me as the named driver?
Any help gratefully received!
Many thanks, Sarah

Get quotes for either situation. It will be more expensive to insure the car herself.Mortgage free

Any idea how to do that before we have bought the car?
Thanks

Dummy quotes on comparison sites?0

The policyholder should be the main driver - presumably you. This will also almost certainly be the cheaper option.0

How many times is someone likely to take your daughter out for lessons ni your car each week?
If its your car, in your name and you are the main driver then I would insure it yourself and then take out a 'learner' policy with someone else. Learner insurance does not have to be the same as your main insurance and can run for a set number of days or months.
18 months ago it was far too expensive to add my daughter to my own policy as a learner so I got specific learner driver insurance using Marmalade, I paid a set amount for 3 months cover and could renew for 1,2,3 months at a time. She subsequently passed and then we had to get her as a named driver on our own policy which, luckily for me, happened 2 weeks before renewal so it was easy for me to get lots of (expensive!) quotes.
My son has just started lessons and I have opted to use 'covered on demand' this time around as it works out cheaper for me based on the fact we go out twice a week. You buy a set number of days and use the app on phone or web site on your lap top and get covered by the day.
What normally happens is that 10 minutes before we are due to go out, I activate the insurance for that day and the cover note is emailed to me - it is valid from the time I activate it for the rest of that day and one of my purchased insured days is consumed/crossed off. This works for me.
If you are likely to go out quite often on several days each week then 'covered on demand' will probably work out expensive. Covered on demand might seem complicated when you first look at it as there are several options.

As already suggested, use the comparison sites. Do quotes entering details with your daughter as a provisional license holder and also as a full license holder just to see what the cost might be when she passes.
If you have a particular model and age of car in mind then the easiest way of getting a quote is to enter a valid registration number of such a car. If you go to the Autotrader.co.uk web site and do a search for that type/age of car then you can note a registration number from the pictures. Don;t worry, there is nothing nefarious in doing this and entering a reg number that isn't yours - many people do this to get quotes for cars before they buy.
Having done the learner insurance thing for two kids myself recently I know it can take up plenty of time to find the best/cheapest combination.
Hope this helps.0 -
Also take into account that there's a possibility that you may not be able to use any no claims payout have earned while driving the van.
I found it cheaper to insure a car solely in my daughters name and by the time she passed she had nearly earned a years no claims in her own right.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
As already mentioned, we bought separate learner insurance for short periods to allow us to take the learner out on 'lessons' My own insurance wanted £80 per month extra to do this on my own policy. Learners insurance was less than this if I remember correctly. and you can pick & choose when you want it.0

I'd echo the previous comments about learner insurance, worked very well when we used it.
We now use Admiral car sharing cover for my son, he doesn't use the car much so it's much cheaper at £15-20 a pop than £1500 for the year.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
