Security Cameras

We are thinking of beefing up our home security with a security camera - but I have little knowledge of such things
I believe that there are laws concerning where the camera can point ?
We are thinking of a wireless link to the router (IP connection ?) but that is the limit of my knowledge
I would be looking at either a 100% waterproof camera or one that would work through a conservatory window ??
Any help welcome
