Hi all,
My wife and I are moving into our new house soon and went sofa shopping a few days ago. I cannot believe the prices of these things. We went to SCS, Harveys, Dwell, DFS and most were quoted around £2500 to £3000 (even with a discounted sale price). I know nothing about sofas, but I only expected to pay around £1000
We are looking for a leather corner sofa (not one of the supersized ones) and a 2 seather.
Can anyone give us any advise or tips on how to buy a sofa?
I have read previous threads and am not sure if waiting for the xmas sales will make a difference

You're probably better off posting this somewhere more relevant in the forums, as it has nothing to do with buying or selling property.0

It will be like anything, if every provider is charging similar prices, if you pay half or even a third of where the market is at then you are probably getting something inferior....you get what you pay for as they say.
Have you tried some of the local retailers rather than the larger companies? Also what about other places like John Lewis/M&S etc? We bought our bed from John Lewis recently and it was miles cheaper than the bed shops for the exact same bed.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. As above, quite tenuous to post in the House Buying section when the only link is that you're buying the sofa because you've bought a house.0

Buy second hand. There are plenty of practically brand new sofas on eBay and Gumtree for a few hundred pounds, and far better quality than DFS and the likes. You get a courier to collect. Do your research (there are bad buys there too) and it will save you hundreds.
My current sofa cost me £150 including delivery. It was less than a year old and cost ten times that originally. It's still going strong ten years later.0 -
£1k for both or each?
Keep a close eye on Fishpools' Outlet page and their Clearance page - usually some fab bargains on the latter.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0 -
There are quite a few furniture outlets out there that sell off cancelled orders for big retailers at discounted rates. While they can still be pricey, they are cheaper than the eye watering prices demanded by the big boys.
An example are Trade Secret https://www.trade-secret.co.uk/ . These guys are in Northwich in Cheshire but also have somewhere in Oxfordshire.
Another one is Cheshire Furniture Outlet https://www.cheshirefurniture-outlet.co.uk in Cheadle though these do more dining and bedroom furniture than soft furnishings.
We're in South Manchester, so these 2 sites are local (ish) to us, but I'm pretty sure that if you search online, there will be similar sort of places near to you. A colleague of mine at work has mentioned that there is another one in Marple, near Stockport, so they are about - just not massively publicised (as its not in the interests of their suppliers).0 -
I second going to a charity shop or Gumtree. We got our sofa and armchair from someone on Gumtree when we moved. The suite was leather, looked brand new, and we got two other bits of good-quality furniture at the same time, all for about £300. I estimated that the other furniture alone was worth the £300; the suite new would have cost a fortune. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Try your local independent - expect better service and lower prices0

I’ve marked this as spam since otherwise we’ll have people posting here asking about food mixer sales on the tenuous grounds now they are buying a new house they have space for one,0

There's no need to mark as spam. Just message a BG to have it moved elsewhere (which I will do now).0
