    How old is it?

Fiestas with the old Ford pushrod engine do get tappety with age and miles. This can be fixed to an extent with adjustments that any mechanic can sort for next to no cost. These engines were fitted into Fiestas throughout the 90s.

The good news is that that engine is tough and durable, and although not especially reliable the noise is fairly common and they can run for a very long time in that state without further problems.

As JJames says, it's standard to have some rattles - but if you're not sure ask a local - don't scare the main dealers - garage to confirm it.

Maybe an oil change wouldn't be a bad idea. National Tyres & other centres do it for around £15 filter as well!!
