Used car price - haggle?

My old civic is on its last legs - it's 16 years old and the gearbox is in bad shape. I would get it replaced but I cant find an old one.
Anyhow, I've been looking for a secondhand civic, and I found on but it's priced about £1000 more than I was looking to pay (my max was 10k (gulp!) ) - it's 1.5 years old and is 11k from a main dealer

This is probaly another one of my stupid questions, but I never bought a used car before - is it worth trying to get this price down? Could I drive a hard bargain and get it for 10k (having to pay on CC)?

Cheers

Tell them your best offer, say "I am prepared to buy the car today and this is my final offer"

I doubt they will accept a CC without adding a fee.

They could always do what I do, take the dealer offered finance (which may bag a bit of a discount anyway) then pay it off with the credit card almost straight away. Then balance transfer to a 0% card :money:.

Do the finance Co not require a fee to pay the loan off by CC then?

And how do you do a 0% transfer without getting stung for a %?

Paying off with a 0% card would be better, but I haven't seen a proper 0% deal on purchases for ages.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Not when I did it last.

My last fee was 1.9% for 24 months 0% then I transfer again. I can live with that.

In a main dealer or any dealer there is always room for a deal. Offer 9k never show your hand first time of asking. It's actually doable to get the car cheaper than 10k on an 11k motor.
  • As above. Offer them the £9k. If they want anything over what you're wanting to pay don't say you'll have to think about it just say you can't do that, i'll pay £10k but that's really my best offer.

If they still say no then say ok then thanks anyway & start to walk out.

They may or may not let you get out the door. No shame in going back another day if you really really want it & have decided to pay over your £10k.

Totally agree. I passed my test in July- NEVER bought a car before even I knocked him down £500 plus new front tyres and some bodywork fixing.

It's mid quarter for some main dealers too. They won;t turn you down. Best of luck.

If you've found a 1.5 year old civic for £11k at a main dealer (where you'll ALWAYS pay a premium) then you should definitely be able to find a 1-2 year old one elsewhere for well within your your £10k budget.

I don't see the point in paying a main dealer premium for a car that's still covered by the manufacturers warranty anyway,. Try looking around a bit more.

Prices are so transparent now with online sites such as autotrader etc, that many dealers don't make a whole lot of money on used cars for cash buying. (I am led to believe). Haggling a lot off may be difficult.

Car dealers seem to make more money via providing finance options now.
