I still think it's ludicrous that "banks" hold so little cash. I mean, I get it on the one hand - safety - but seriously? I drew our lottery syndicate's money out of the Santander cash machine the week before Christmas. With hindsight I should've just gone to the counter in the first place but I was trying not to keep hubby waiting. Of course, the machine gave me £20s when I needed £10s and £5s. So I ended up at the counter anyway. I then had to pay the cash back in, to draw it back out in the denominations required - the cashier couldn't just change it for me. A couple of years ago when I needed 28 pound coins for the same purpose, I was told they didn't have enough in the till to give me!

As soon as tills get to £20 they are banked and removed from tills, unless you manage to get a cashier who hasnt banked their coin from their tills, (normally early morning or before lunch)

In relation to swopping notes this doesn't happen now, as you need a paper trail so notes are paid in and withdrawn in the denominations you need.

Yes it was a rule added when the overdraft changes came in in November, there are signs in the branches and the staff have been updated, that said if you came to me I would pay them in, if you had lugged 10 bags to the bank I wouldn't turn you away, but the rule is 5 bags.

It used to be 5 bags, then they removed it to any amount, and then must have realised that it was causing lots of extra admin to send all the coin back, so its back to 5 bags again.

I took one old £5 note and 8 old pound coins into my bank after Christmas and was given a new £10 note and 3 new pound coins. This did not go through my bank account.

Happy New Year potters! I'm finally out of the trap with some egg money - £4 added to the pot and I've collected some shrapnel from around the house too, so will put that later.

I must check I don't have any old pound coins and get them changed if I do.
  • I've added twice to my sealed pot over the weekend YAY!!
