How to choose a mattress for someone else?

Options
Hi all, are there any bed experts out there?

My elderly mum has asked me to organise a new mattress for her.
She is getting more lower back pain recently, and we are looking for anything that might help (altho it's as likely to be arthritis as much as anything). We realised today that she has had the same mattress for many years - it was our spare bed mattress before that. There certainly can't be much support left in it.

Mum is fairly frail, hardly ever goes out and really can't face going and trying mattresses in a shop. Although we need to find her something to support her back, she definitely won't get on with a firm mattress. She doesn't weigh much these days.

I have tempur mattress, which I love, so I'm thinking of getting her one of those, but I'm open to advice.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

That sounds like a good plan particularly if she suffers with the cold or maybe a cheaper memory foam mattress with a really luxurious feather topper?

  • There are mattresses being advertised on the TV that have a money back guarantee if you're not happy with them. Might that be the way to go? That way she can try it, and if she doesn't like it you can try another one.

You should buy a mattress according to her weight; my mum had constant back pain until she bought a new mattress, the assistant asked how much she weighed and that was relevant in terms of what mattress she needed. She slept wonderfully after that and the pain went.

I wonder if she'll struggle to get used to a tempur mattress, would a mattress topper first help?

Does she have a spare bed at home, and does she like that any better?

I have a tempur mattress, I think it ok but others dislike the way you sink into it. Can you mum try out your mattress?

Not really, firstly because she lives over 100 miles away - and doesn't want to make the trip. She'll be coming up at Christmas, but we really need to sort it out sooner than that.

She "can't face" making the journey twice before Christmas, even tho' we fetch her in the car. I'm afraid "I can't face it" is a phrase we hear very often these days.

Anyway our mattress is about 6 years old, so might not be representative of a new one.

Twmour and foam mattresses can be very hot in summer. One might suit her but will be a very expensive mistake if she gets it wrong and it can’t be exchanged.
