Kettle went wrong before end of guarantee

My parents' kettle went wrong and they were pleased to discover it was within guarantee (couple of weeks to go).
When they took it back today, the assistant in the store said they didn't have the same model, but offered an equivalent that was £3 more and said they had to pay the £3 difference. Not wanting to hold up the long queue behind them, they agreed to pay it after querying it and being told they had to pay.
Is this right? I thought you were entitled to an identical or similar replacement free of charge?

It depends on the terms of the guarantee.0

I buy mine from Costco.. it gives them an almost infinite guarantee. However, each time the price does go up a bit. I guess inflation ect.
£3 for a 'new' kettle isn't bad, considering it'd be covered again by a new guarantee.0 -

It might not. Most guarantee replacements mean the new item is rated at the old guarantee dates.
The OP needs to differentiate between their legal rights and the guarantee offerings. £3 is a good price it if were a low priced kettle. If it were a Porche designed Siemens, then perhaps not.0
